- Alice Herz (nĂ©e StrauĂ; May 25, 1882 â March 26, 1965) was a longtime peace activist who was the first person in the United States known to have immolated herself in protest of the escalating Vietnam War, following the example of Buddhist monk ThĂch Qu?ng Ă?c who immolated himself in protest of the oppression of Buddhists under the South Vietnamese government.
