About Mercedes Aráoz

  • Mercedes Rosalba Aráoz Fernández (born 5 August 1961) is a Peruvian economist, professor, and politician.
  • She has been the second Vice President of Peru since the election of President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in 28 July 2016.
  • After his resignation, she acted as sole Vice President of Martín Vizcarra since 23 March 2018.
  • Aráoz also served Prime Minister, from 17 September 2017 to 2 April 2018, during Kuczynski's presidency; as well as Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism from 2006 to July 2009, after which she was appointed Peru's finance minister. In April 2016, Aráoz was elected as Congresswoman for 2016–2021.
  • In June 2016, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski was elected as president of Peru and Aráoz as the second vice president. On 30 September 2019, the Congress of the Republic of Peru declared the suspension of the presidency of Martín Vizcarra and named Aráoz as acting president of Peru through a disputed process.
  • Government sources said that this suspension is void, as congress had been dissolved hours before by Vizcarra, who replaced Kuczynski as President after the latter's resignation over a corruption scandal in 2018.
  • The Peruvian Armed Forces continue to recognize Vizcarra as president of Peru and head of the armed forces.
  • Aráoz resigned as interim president the day after on 1 October 2019.
  • However, her resignation is not official, since in Peru the resignation of the vice president has to be accepted by the Congress and that institution is not holding meetings given the dissolution.
